Altos de Chavón
When arriving at Altos de Chavon one is transported to a remote village of Italy, where peace and tranquility SET IN. It's recognized as being a muse for artists, so much national as international talents, with its cobble stone streets, terracotta and coral stone blocks buildings. You can say it molds in its architectural landscape with the nature of La Romana.
Chavon rose from the imagination of Dominic Bluhdorn who is the CEO of the Altos de Chavon Cultural Foundation center, she transmitted her ideas to her father Charles Bludhorn whom in 1976, with the aspiration of materializing his daughter's dream, set his sights towards creating an architectural masterpiece that would be timeless in admiration. The Italian architect Roberto Copa , was responsible for carrying out this idea, therefore recreating a reflection of Tuscan style in all its magnificence. One cannot deny that Altos de Chavon is a jewel of creation, with spectacular views of the River Chavon. The best view of the river, in its entire splendor, is appreciated front of the Church San Estanislao that is found in the center of Chavon. Thus it was named in honor of S. S. Juan Pablo II, since the origin of the Pontific was Poland and the patron of Poland is San Stanislaw
A few steps away is The Amphitheater, inaugurated in 1982 it housed its first performers; Frank Sinatra and Carlos Santana. In the passing of time this wonder with its 5000 seats in coral stone, a true replica of a Greek theater, has been the gathering place of renown artist such as Juan Luis Guerra, Duran Duran, Micheal Camilo, Sergio Mendez, Pet shop Boys, Heart, English Beat, America, Tania Maria, Scandal, Spiro Gyra, Julio Iglesias, Gloria Estefan, Miguel Bose, Air Supply, and the Dance Theatre of Harlem etc.
This village is also the lodging for the School Of Design of Altos de Chavon; in its quarters it contains art galleries, museum on the Caribbean Indians (taino), stores and nightclubs.
